Synopsis

Album Description
Produced by Budz and akw at Studio 684 in San Francisco (home of APG Records), american pi presents a unique and satisfying sound that is sure to add a new spark to rock music. This debut, solo effort by APG recording artist austin willacy builds upon his a cappella roots with the use of inventive instrumentation and arrangements. He refuses to be bound by traditions that might limit his arsenal to the mere handful of instruments deemed appropriate for alt-rock. american pi is not only suffused with a solid rhythm section, keyboards and guitars, but is also filled out with violins, cellos, and accordion. Supported by some of the best musicians around, including Jon Evans on bass (Tori Amos band) and Andrew Borger on drums/percussion (Tom Waits' band) as well as Rob Burger on keyboards and accordion, Mark Orton on guitar and Carla Kihlstedt on violin, (all from the incomprable Tin Hat Trio), together they make american pi a groundbreaking debut album from an artist whose singular voice and personal style bring innovation and excitement at every turn. Taking willacy's collection still further are his heartfelt and deeply moving lyrics, penned with a clear understanding of the human psyche sung by one of the most unique vocal perspectives in the music scene today. With the addition of tasteful, eclectic and acoustic touches, austin's compositions transcend the pedestrian and enter the plane of both the unexpected and the unforgettable.

CD Reviews

America the beautiful (Pi)
Brenda Calhoun | Seattle, WA | 05/05/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Oh, if every new CD I buy could have all of the tracks be this intriguing and thought-provoking. This CD rocks when I want to and smoothes out in some melodic slower tempos with very interesting new sounds. Austin's voice is truly a beautiful and lush instrument all in itself...witness the song "anymore" to back me up on this one. This CD should be in everyone's collection. Every song is a gem."

"i must say, i totally disagree with the reviewer below. austin is brilliant, and the album goes beyond the depth of his lyrics penned with the house jacks. sure, it's not bubble-gum pop, but who needs more of that in this world? we are in sore need of new voices, and this album provides us with one of the best. not to mention the diverse instrumentation and innovative production choices! andale, austin!"
New Music from a New Perspective

"For those who knew Austin from the House Jacks, American Pi is a step in a totally different direction. However, most listeners will recognize that his quality songwriting, vocals, and tasty arrangements, although different from his work with the Jacks, are still prevailant and much more liberated. For those who don't know Austin from the Jacks, I think it would fair to say that this guy is an incredible vocalist and writer, whose songs speak from the heart and reach for the heart while provoking thought on all levels. I've always been fond of his work because he requires his listeners to work a little harder than your average singer/songwriter, this factor remains in American Pi."
