CD Reviews

Surprisingly AMAZING
Randall Sundt | Indianapolis, IN | 08/17/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I had always been a fan of the music that Wind-Up has been putting out there and bands that they have signed. I was going through their list of bands and came across Atomship. At first, I was skeptical with the name and title, and could have easily written them off as a weird band that liked to talk about aliens.

I was in for a great surprise.

From the beginning, these guys blew me away. All skeptism was gone. Aside from the fact that they have very creative songs, they're also very talented. It's rare when you listen to a band's lead singer and can't associate his voice with anyone else. That uniqueness is a rare quality in this day in age.

Being a percussionist, I loved that much more when listening to them. Their drummer is phenomenal. I would put him up there with Danny Carrey of Tool in complexity and talent.

All the elements of this band just mesh very well with one another. I had this CD in my player for a month before I made myself take it out and listen to the other 20 CDs I had lined up to listen to at the time.

This is definitely a quality CD. If you're in for something unique and a mind blowing experience, pick em up and have a listen."
Awesome dynamic band

"These guys are a God send to a rock genre stagnating under the weight of pop punk, Tool and Nirvana wannabes, and just otherwise useless bands. Taking influences like Tool, Rush, Yes, Dream Theatre and countless other metal and prog rock bands, have woven the best elements of the sound from these groups into something wholly original.

I found Atomship by accident after picking up the Punisher Soundtrack and hearing the acoustic piece called "Time For People." I decided to pick up their album after finding out when it was released. I bought it at Wal Mart of all places. I was not fully prepared for what I was about to hear.

Crash of 47 just blew me away. Every song on the CD was nearly flawless awesome unrelenting rock that demands full attention from first to last. "Pencil Fight" is the first single and probably my favorite song off the album. "Time For People", "Mothra", "Withered" and "Aliens" are all stand out songs as well. The whole album is incredible but those songs are my personal favorites.

Joey Culver has an incredible voice which compliments these songs perfectly. At times he is sinister and at others he's almost soulful, he definitely is a singer to be reckoned with. The drummer is a sick technical mastermind and their guitarist has talent to spare."
Wow...just WOW....

"Wow. Before I go into this, I must state the obvious: This is one amazing album. It's unlike anything rock has made in the past years, and is well deserving of recognition. It's purely amazing. A rock style that mixes progressive rock elements, a hard, agressive alternative metal flavor, and unique vocal stylings all combined with brilliant songwriting and outstanding musicianship...is well worth listening to. Here's a track by track review:

1. Day of Daze. Heavy, yet melodic opener. The lyrics are quite interesting. The chorus delivers a heavy, catchy vibe that will stick in your head and won't leave for a while (which is good). I really like how the verses give a light, glittering feel to the overall sound. 9/10

2. Mothra. Wow. This is well deserving of the "Best Track" award for this album. This truly prooves Atomship can play, but creating a progressive track that changes tempos like socks and references Godzilla. How can you go wrong with that? Quite an epic song, and they go crazy at the end (which is really sweet). The double-bass at the end is a great touch. 10/10

3. Dragonfly. One of my favorites. The chorus gets me, with lyrics I wish I could've concieved. Joey's vocals on this one soar, and you'll find yourself playing this one over and over. This one starts a little soft, but builds to a dramatic climax. 10/10

4. Pencil Fight. The first single off the album is well deserving of the honor. The piano-like intro is especially cool. This song builds very well, coming to an epic climax. Not the best song, but very well written one. 8/10

5. Withered. The second single is a slow acoustic song that is just breathtaking. Beautiful. The lyrics convey such deep emotion, and Joey's voice is so soothing. Brilliant. 9/10

6. Agent Orange. Withered dives straight into Agent Orange, which is a complicated track that you have to hear to understand truly. The end sure is swell, where they pump out some heavy riffs. 8/10

7. Time For People. The first Atomship song I heard, and it still blows me away. The pure, slow emotion exhibited by this one leaves me breathless. Slow and heavy, emotional and intelligent. The acoustic intro that leads into the heavy riffs definately deserve props. Very nice. 8/10

8. Aliens. This one really has a spacey feel to it. Obviously though, considering it's about aliens. Nice and heavy for a mid-album crunch. Kind of drags along, and is sort of anti-climactic. Not the best song. 7/10

9. Whitfield. The chorus of this song is one of the best parts on the entire album. Whitfield opens with some verses that drive at a medium-fast pace, but the chorus slows it down to a halt and just blows away the listener with heartfelt lyrics and gut-wrenching vocals. Amazing audio experiance. 9/10

10. Friends. A nice heavy one for the near end of the album. Another spacey feel is instilled into this one, and it creates a strong consistency through the song. The lyrics are really sad: I'm guessing they're about some of his friends who drowned when he was a child. The emotion is shown very well. 8/10

11. Plastic People. Great closer! The music is eerie and haunting, and the vocals simply add more to it. It builds up for a climactic end, then softly fades away. 8/10

Amazing album.

So buy it now and support these amazing artists."
