CD ReviewsPOOR MAN'S GO-BETWEENS JUST-MY-OPINION | Oklahoma United States | 02/06/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "I am reviewing this particular ASHTRAY BOY cd (their 2nd effort) because I consider it to be their best. Their debut THE HONEYMOON SUITE (which featured Liz Phair on the wonderful 'Shirley Maclaine) comes in a close second. Randall Lee comes off as a good natured, sorta goofy-carefree Grant McLennan. The tunes stick with that trademark guitar strum that Aussies do so well. This is consistent from top to bottom with no filler. I think their fourth effort THE EVERYMAN'S 4th DIMENSION may also be orth looking into, but their 3rd cd (CANDYPANT'S BEACH) had lots of filler but it had the cool songs 'Road Kill', 'One Leg' and a great cover of Neil Young's 'Heart Of Gold'. If you like ASHTRAY BOY (the distinctive sounds of Randall Lee) also look into the two NICE cds that are out-of-print, but available used thru Amazon. He was also in a Mekons-like group (a billion line-up changes) called THE CANNANES for a short period of time in the mid to late 80's, but Randall hit his stride with NICE when he was able to be the front and center leader of a group. Just make sure you get the right NICE group. There was another group called THE NICE from the late 60's, I believe."
