CD ReviewsA Little More Specific James | 08/31/2009 (3 out of 5 stars) "It's easy to compare The Ascent of Everest to Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Explosions in the Sky - but I will do you a favor and cut that nonsense out right now. You are going to find similarities in any post-rock outfit you come across, but to say these folks are comparable to the aforementioned artists - specifically Explosions in the Sky - is simply wrong.
If you enjoy tons of eerie ambience and orchestrated experimentation (mildy comparable to Godspeed, Sparrows Swarm and Sing, etc), this album should be added to your music library. If you favor more triumphant, less-noise-more-rock instrumentation (like Explosions, This Will Destroy You, or Caspian) then this album won't quite fit the bill. The post-rock genre can be split and disected into countless sub-genres, so don't get confused by lethargic reviewers who compare The Ascent of Everest to the first band pulled out of the proverbial "hat". And I say these things not only to protect The Ascent's artistic credibility, but also to help clear the air for any potential customers. I am glad I now own How Lonely Sits the City, but to call it "incredible" would be an overstatement. They aren't exactly pioneers in what they do, but they are keeping the wheel rolling by playing post-rock equally eerie and uplifting." |
