Synopsis

The postmodern music of the Russian composer Artyomov (b. 1940) takes much from Scriabin without sounding at all like him. Artyomov's music, like Scriabin's, is mostly textures and slowly-shifting orchestral colors, but without the earlier composer's Romanticism. This is very intense music, which is quite common with what's coming out of the former Soviet Union. In Memoriam (1984) is a symphony that flows around a violin following an A Minor theme that always stays tonal in character. Artyomov is of that generation of composers moving away from Shostakovich's shadow and finding their own voices. This is gripping, intelligent and, ultimately, very rewarding music. --Paul Cook
