While orthodoxy and predictably has taken its toll on the once so exciting Norwegian Black Metal scene, a quite different breed of metal is establishing itself in the northern outpost of our civilization. At the forefront of a scene boiling with sludgy and industrial metal is Arabrot, a band that are now about to be represent for the young generation what the sum of Melvins, Throbbing Gristle and Swans was to the generation before them. While their catalog includes three albums produced by Steve Albini and Billy Anderson, this EP marks a change in their career towards a darker and more hypnotic sound and longer song structures. Arabrot s sonic ambition goes far wider than traditional song writing and instrumentation and I Rove is a document of that. At the core is still a basic drums and guitars set-up, but as the first track thunders along through it s 20 minutes, a musical vision is revealed that echoes the dramaturgy of Tarkovsky s Stalker or Hamsun s Sult. In addition to the monster track I Rove, the EP also includes a classic cover of "The Money Will Roll Right In" and a partybanger called The Serpent.
