Adventure

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I found this album in the used bin at a local record store, and remembered having read a favorable review at pitchforkmedia.com. It was cheap, so I decided to give it a shot. i've been listening to the album for about a week now and I've got to say that it pretty much rocks. the album tells the story of the quest for a two-headed butterfly that somehow ends with an atomic bomb being dropped. I really can't follow the story, but listening to the album evokes a sense of fun, light-hearted adventure. it's all pretty silly, really, but the music is compelling and fun. the best thing about it for me is the organ, which is a main focus of the apes' music. it seems to be at the forefront of every song, and the guitar tends to be playing rythm with the bass/drums. one of the songs is a mellow, hypnotic organ solo. the singer is pretty good, not spectacular. but his delivery fits the bizarre storyline well. all in all, to sum up their sound, think Deep Purple or Blue Oyster Cult in the overall mood, Fugazi in the driving beat, and the Flaming Lips in its quirky adventuresomeness."
