CD Reviews

Annie Ross in a lush 60's setting
jazmaan | Santa Monica, CA United States | 02/14/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This lp places Annie Ross in a lush 60's setting with full orchestration. More pop oriented than her previous solo recordings with Gerry Mulligan or Zoot Sims, but still pretty jazzy. My favorites are "Nature Boy" and "I've Got A Lot of Livin' To Do"."
Annie Ross with strings... and 50's pop standards...

"I prefer annie Ross is a jazz setting like her "Sings A Song With Mulligan" ot wirh L,H,&R on "The Hottest New Group In Jazz" or "Flying High With", or "Sing Ellington." If I want to hear beautiful pop standrds circa late 50's, I'll buy one of Keely Smith's great Nelson riddle or Billy May arranged Lp's, not Annie Ross with strings, she belongs with a jazz combo swingin'. Not one of her best, but still not too bad, but again an artist like Keely Smith would have sounded better with the songs and arrangements on this CD."
Good but not her best

"My favorite Annie Ross album is out-of-print: A Swinger, with Zoot Simms. That said, this isn't too bad. She doesn't hit it out of the park, but the arrangements and orchestration are fine. With limited vocal range, Annie depends on emotional impact to win you over. Her best stuff is out-of-print, though, alas."
