CD Reviews

One of the finest...

"OK, it is true I am a big Annie Gallup fan, and it is true that she and I are good friends, but I will not let that cloud my opinion of one of my favorite 5 CDs of the year 2000! This album was recorded in a theater, mostly just Annie and her electric guitar, all alone, and it is just damned impressive!!My favorites off of this album are "3 Photographs" (the account of 3 photographs taken of a person and how the photos faired over the years), "James" (the story of a fine magician who can make things disappear, even lovers), and Anything is Possible (an anthem if I ever heard one). I can't imagine someone purchasing this CD and not loving everything on it... Annie Gallup is a supremely talented individual, with a style all her own and a songwriting capability most songwriters would be envious of!!Buy it..."

"Annie Gallup's recordings are as addictive as they are offbeat. Her unique voice and songwriting make for a unique sound. Vocally, her voice has a bit of a whisper like Suzanne Vega's. On Annie's CD Swerve, she did a hilarious song "Three Bills." On this set, she has a companion piece "Three Photographs" in which she talk-sings an improbable tale laid over a thumping bass. The title track boils gently like a newfound romance, "I loved you sleeping while I turned in our little nest; You have a sweet, soft mouth, a tattooed chest." "Tiger" is a minute & a half of bliss of apparently random thoughts during a card game. "Jack McGraw" has a catchy tune with Annie's wild lyrical tale, "I drive all night to see him down the long dark highways, through the small dark towns up the hill to his place & I find him asleep, stretched across the bed like a man in the habit of taking up space." "Anything Is Possible" rolls with a nice energy to Annie's acoustic strum, "Last night I slept in a farmhouse in Arkansas, windows wide open, there were crickets & barking dogs; At dawn there was a rooster & a barnyard full of sheep; I could tell exactly where I was, but I didn't get much sleep." Gallup's music has a unique vision & sound. She is one artist whose every CD has an honored place in my collection. Enjoy!"
