Synopsis

One of the most vital fusions of trad jazz, Cuban folk, and contemporary hip-hop finally sees a stateside release. Miguel "Anga" Diaz is a pre-eminent conga-player and member of the widely (and justly) popular Buena Vista Social Club. He's assembled quite the multi-culti crew here: a French DJ; a flautist; a Malian griot; and two of the finest Cuban pianists, ever. Among the highlights, there's a tightly-controlled, strings-heavy arrangement of '"Round Midnight" that will make your head spin. Though not as original, the take on "A Love Supreme" is engaging enough, thanks mostly to bassist Cachaito Lopez, who's as much the star of this album as Anga himself. (And to be fair, it's hard to think of a more difficult song to cover.) The rest of the album is thrilling, a spiritual and unlikely melding of some of the world's greatest music. --Mike McGonigal

CD Reviews

Amazing
Christopher M. Montes | Santa Barbara, California | 03/29/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is amazing, and will not disappoint. Anga really knows how to play the tumba, he is a beast when it comes to conga playing. My personal favorite track is: San Juan Y Martinez. Although I enjoy listening to Patato & Totico, as well as Los papines, I would have to say that this is by far my favorite album."
Earthy, rhythmic music at near its best

"A very strong album that reveals a bit more each time it is played. A series of unexpected, but highly pleasant, turns and transitions. One of those few albums that is best heard from beginning to end. Perfect for a late afternoon-early evening get-together with friends. Highly recommended.

Echu Mingua

"Echu Mingua is a great cd by Miguel "Anga" Diaz. Great percussionist who didn't fail to deliver in this mix. His version of A Love Supreme by John Coltrane is one of my favorites. Spiritual and just a feast for the ears. May he rest in peace.
