CD Reviews

The smooth ride through their catalog that you'd expect
Richard Diaz | 11/27/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"First off, the tracks listed are correct, but in a much different order. On to the review:You've got to hand it to San Francisco's OM gang, as they've been cranking out consistently pleasing albums all year (nearly a dozen so far) with nary a misstep. Now, after focusing on DJ mixes and Lounge comps, they're finally releasing a label follow-up of their housier side with Andy Caldwell of Soulstice at the helm. What you get, after a bit bumpy start, is the smooth ride through their catalog that you'd expect, bits of warm funk, midtempo, latin percussion, and soul all flavoring the mix. Caldwell, in fact, often highlights the disc with the dreamy-deep "Quiet Nights" and Kevin Yost's expectedly jazzy re-rub of "Tenderly." Other notables include the stuttered and EQ'd "Cut Less Supreme" by West Magnetic and Gabriel Rene's "Don't You Cry."OM followers may find this a bit too familiar, with some tracks debuting on other releases...nonetheless a rewarding peak into what those hipsters on the west coast have been brewing up for some time. Grade: B"
A very mello compilation from the OM gang

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Let me start of by saying this would have been a 3 1/2 stars if the rating system allowed. This isn't a bad album, it just isn't really what I want in house music. The folks at OM have a history of making good stuff, just keep in mind not all of it is house music. This mix starts out o.k. then picks up by track 2 "Mo(ve)ments," followed by "Cut Less Supreme" & "Fooling Myself." The cd takes a turn for the worst after track 6 with a list of jams that are, for lack of a better discription, empty. The saving grace for the second part of the mix is track 14 "Distance" by West Magnetic. It's an off tempo jam that reminds me of the classic house jam "Jump" from the early 90's. Sad thing is it's less than three minutes and really doesn't fit with the rest of the later tracks. This cd is a bumpy ride and isn't one I'll play all the time. If I were going on a long ride and wanted some background house music to listen to while talking to friends, this would suffice."
Sounds of Om...A Melodic Journey
cafe-verve | Naugatuck, CT United States | 06/08/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"All your friends will want to borrow it! This album is entertaining enough to make chillin' at home exciting! Long car ride....put this in...Stuck in traffic...this album will release the tension... The albums starts off with the soothing "don't worry" by Jazmin & Face and then kicks into 2nd gear with "mo(ve)ments". Once you get to Gabriel Rene's "dont you cry", you kind of drift off and forget what track you were listening to...Oh well, King Koobas heavily remixed "fooling myself" (kooba batucada mix) leaves you wanting to start from the beginning all over again....Sounds of OM is a melodic journey of perfectly blended rhythm that will constantly stay in rotaion. I'm not sure where the list on amazon.com came from maybe these tracks were rearranged but on my CD, the songs are in this order: 1. Dont Worry-Jazmin & Face 2. Mo(ve)ments-Rithma 3. Cut Less Supreme-West Magnetic 4. Fooling Myself-King Kooba (D.C. Mix) 5. Lovely-Soulstice 6. Laughter-Rithma 7. Dont You Cry-Gabriel Rene 8. Blue Royal-West Magnetic 9. Tenderly-Soulstice (K.Y. Mix) 10. Carnaval-Andy Caldwell 11. Future Tropic-Afro Mystik (House Mix) 12. Quiet Nights-Andy Caldwell 13. Inner Space Sonata-Afro Mystik 14. Distance-West Magnetic 15. Fooling Myself-King Kooba (K.B. Mix)"
