Andrew's first recording of his new songs in 9 years blends historical, spiritual, personal and political themes, plus Born a Chicken: 12 previously unrecorded, 2 old songs reworked, an epic take with the gang including Darwin McBeth Walton's vocals and hand drum, Basho Parks' fiddle and Big Llou Johnson's quips on The Crawdad Song; and a setting of The Musical Instrument, Elizabeth Barrett Browning's last poem, with Lana Lupiani on cello. Andrew's daughter Casey sings leads and harmonies on four tracks; Tracy Grammer's violin and vocal harmonies, Gary Cleland's bass light up The Gates of Love and Freedom Road. Runako Robinson sings a verse of Shout!, an evocation of the power of the song rituals of the enslaved Africans; Dakota traces a Lakota sundance in Nebraska, and Moon and Sea evokes the wild peace of a remote island in Maine.
