Synopsis

This is a gorgeous disc, showing the pianistic maturity of André Watts, who was not always this colorful a Chopin player. Watts begins, rather daringly, with the Second Piano Sonata and doesn't even seem intimidated by the "Funeral March," which he plays poetically and without affectation. Throughout this piece, and in the shorter works that follow, Watts shows a sensitivity toward tonal shadings that is uncommon in contemporary pianists. This is one of the best Chopin CDs of the past decade, and the excellent recorded sound helps considerably in its success. --Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

Different and enjoyable
J. L. Wong | Pennsylvania | 04/19/2002

"My daughter and I saw Andre Watts live in Philadelphia in March, 2002. The Chopin was by far our favorite part of the program, and this disc can show why - especially on the less-recorded Nocturnes, Etudes, and Ballade. These are a pleasure and indeed, a learning experience. The program notes are also helpful to the novice classical listener and intermediate piano student. This disc shows the "softer" side of Mr. Watts, not just bombast and technical display."
This will kill you

"What are you doing?! Why don't you have this? Why aren't you listening to it right now and screaming like a madman out of the total euphoric, manic, heart pounding, breath stopping, dark and exhausting trip it takes you on? If you listen to this while driving I guarantee that your chances of getting into a violent accident will increase. If you try, just try, and listen to this while reading or studying you will not get past the first page, you will fail algebra. Try it while cleaning up the house, you'll finish the job faster then a speed fueled junkie. Andre Watts is king, Chopin is something that there will never be a word for. For the person wishing to get to know the master, start here. For the person who's heard it all, start here. Basically Mr. Watts must be possessed by some insane demon of brilliant Chopin interpretation, because I don't know how else to explain what is on this CD here. Don't buy this unless you want to ruin your current way of being. There is no way you could get anything better out of the money you will spend on this."
Doesn't Get Any Better Than Watts

"Out of all the versions I've heard of the Funeral March this is by far the greatest...The most expressive and powerful piano I've heard from a performer ever."
