Lots to enjoy in this tiny opera

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am a huge fan of baroque music, but must admit that some of the big French operas can't hold my interest all the way through. What we have here is a small comedie-ballet by Rameau which is essentially a small one act opera on the subject of Anacreon. No libretto is included, and as I know nothing of Anacreon, I don't even know what the plot is, but that doesn't take away from the fabulous music. There are moments of rustic pleasantness, an apparent tempest complete with lightning, and Bacchanalian revels. Rameau was a master of orchestral colour, and provides a huge range of emotion over the five scenes of this work.

William Christie was a pioneer in the performance of French baroque music, and this 1981 recording shows how even very early on, he had just the right touch. The orchestra is brilliant, and special kudos to the flutes who have some great moments that set a distinctive mood. The solo voices all excel, and the whole group make a delightful sound. Recommended.
