CD Reviews

A poor choice for the lead single
Felt Mountain | Australia | 10/15/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"When I first heard that Amiel's was going to be releasing a new single called ROUND AND ROUND I was very very happy, after loving her debut Audio Out (although a bit sick of it now). When i actually heard the song, I was quite disapointed when I first heard this song because it is corny, unoriginal, hop-hop pop, simple and lame at times etc. etc. I'm sorry to be so negative, but this is just how I feel, the chorus okay, though, but note that the drummung is horrible - whoever played the drums should be fired! -- it was one of the most unoriginal things I had ever heard.

Note that before I heard this song, I heard a song from her website called BE YOUR GIRL and initially thought that this would be the lead single (and it should have been). Amiel fans like her songs melodic, original and with guitars, and track 2, Be Your Girl, hits this trifecta, and thus is my favourite Amiel song so far. It is a rock song. The chorus is relatively quiet, but the chrous is supisingly loud, featuring many electric guitars - and I loved the unpredictability of that! It has a very indie feel (also does RAR but to a lesser extent) but I would have ABSOLUTELY loved this song if the guitars in the chorus were a bit more syncopated, because I don't like this song as much I used to - which is a shame because her album has been pushed back until FEBUARY NEXT YEAR, and because I like Amiel soooo much, I will be listening to the single a lot and may get sick of the above songs a bit. Although the release date is going ahead is planned so I may be able to get a Japan import of the album hopefully, because it sounds excellent.

Track 3 is a so-so remix of Round and Round, a bit corny but still passable, and Track 4 is the very corny, girly, Green eyed World, as featured on the Hating Alion Ashley Soundtrack.

So, to summarise, this single is a bit hit-and-miss, but I hope the album will be, at the very least, good.

Round And Round | 5/10

Be Your Girl | 10/10
