The biggest claim to fame that this modestly talented and short-lived duet team had was their last names. David Frizzell is the less-gifted younger brother of the late honky-tonk legend Lefty Frizzell; Shelly West is the modestly talented daughter of the late, great country singer Dottie West. As a duo, and as solo artists, they had a relatively brief fling with the charts in the early 1980s. The centerpiece of this 10-song collection is "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma," their 1981 duet that reached No. 1 on the country charts, launched their careers, and dramatically eclipsed everything they subsequently recorded. As the other titles suggest--Frizzell's "I'm Gonna Hire a Wino to Decorate Our Home" (his only other chart-topper), West's "Jose Cuervo" (her only other No. 1), and their duet "Another Honk-Tonk Night on Broadway"--these tunes hardly transcend the superficial context of country music's "Urban Cowboy" crossover-crazed era that spawned them. Yet, taken as a whole, they make for pleasant listening and fleeting twinges of nostalgia, all the same. --Bob Allen

"What country music used to be-country! This is a truckers delight, an oilfield dream. Worth the money just to hear "I'm going to hire a wino""
David and Shelly - what a team !

"Bob Allen doesn't like them, but I love them. Yes, their debut duet album was imperfect, but it's curious that each successive album they recorded together was less successful than the one before, yet their music just got better and better. They recorded four duet albums and they also recorded at least two (maybe three) solo albums each around that time.It would therefore not be difficult to provide a full length CD of their music from this period, but all the essentials can be found on this collection. The standout tracks are the duet You're the reason God made Oklahoma, Shelly's Jose Cuervo and David's I'm gonna hire a wino to decorate our home. All three were #1 country hits, deservedly so.Yet, there are other great moments here too. While their biggest solo successes were with fun songs about drinking and having a good time, they could do other songs too, as their other solo tracks here show, particularly Shelly's Flight 309 to Tennessee. Equally, their biggest duet was a romantic love song, but Another honky tonk night on Broadway is a fun song.Overall, this album could be described as lightweight country, but music is meant to be enjoyed and I sometimes wonder if professional critics remember that. If you've spent a lot of time listening to serious music (like, say, Allison Moorer, who's music I also enjoy, but in a very different way), you need something more fun to provide a contrast."

"This is great. I've been looking for these songs ever since it came out but could never find it. I'm going out today to see if I can get it. I grew up with this kind of music and I've only listened to country and I still do. I really appreciate it. Thanks A Million Linda"
