CD Reviews

Everybody, meet Matt, Dan, and Glenn. Boys, meet everybody.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This ep lit the fuse on the upward-bound rocket that these three guys were sitting on. A lot has changed since this was recorded. That's apparent in the sound. Openner "Snake Oil Tanker" steps up to the plate boldly with its punk drumming and group "ahh"s. This is really the only Alk3 song of its kind. Then we get to hear the original recording of "Southern Rock," which was re-done for "Goddamnit." The guitars in this version aren't quite as complex ("since when are the guitars in a Trio song ever complex?" Trust me, if you heard the "Goddamnit" version, you can tell that this version is just a really good rough draft). Then there's this ep's classic: "Cooking Wine." I'm not so sure why this song is so appealing. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but the stamina this track has had among Trio fans is amazing. Maybe it's the lyrics: " . . . and I can't see straight but the two of you look awfully pretty . . ." Then the Trio begins to open up the gates of their emo influence. The title track on this ep throws them into the sea of indie-rock labelling. And boy, it's a good one. Unfortuneately this ep is long out of print, but all four songs are on the self-titled b-side collection."
