CD Reviews

Science fiction scoring at its best
Michael J. Mazza | Pittsburgh, PA USA | 01/15/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Alien Nation" was the science fiction television series (based on a motion picture of the same name) which told the story of an extraterrestrial race being assimilated into the United States in contemporary times. This CD collects excerpts from some of the best music written for the series. The innovative compositions by Steve Dorff, Larry Herbstritt, and David Kurtz are often complemented by the "alien" lyrics of Kenneth Johnson. This talented team created music that not only captured the rich emotional texture of the series, but that also gave us a taste of the alien "Tenctonese" culture depicted each week. Beginning with the thrilling main title--a kinetic blend of percussion and weird alien vocals--this disc is alternatingly frenzied, gentle, exciting, elegant, jarring, playful, and inspirational. It is impossible, in the space of a short review, to mention all of the most outstanding of this disc's 31 varied tracks. But the best of the bunch include the title track; "Howdy, Pod" (#8), which contains beautiful chanting; "George Entertains" (#14), which has a whimsical, Elizabethan feel; "The Ceremony" (#15), with more exceptional chanting; "Slag Pop" (#20), which makes use of some really weird vocal effects; and "Cathy's Story" (#25), a short piece with a real epic sweep and emotional pull."Alien Nation," the series, had a second life in a series of excellent TV movies. And with this superb CD, fans can continue to re-live the saga of the "Newcomers." But even if you're not a fan of the series, you may still love this disc. This is an outstanding example of an effective blend of musical artistry and science fiction."
For a true Alien Nation Fan!

"You have to really love Alien Nation to enjoy this one. Amazon has a few songs you can listen to, to see if you enjoy first. I always loved the soundtracks in the series (and miss it badly) so I bought this CD. I enjoy it, most of the music has a soothing quality and will bring back good memories of a great series cancelled too soon."

"This is a great CD. It collects the best of the series' scores, especially Cathy's Story, The Main Title, and the Generation to Generation tracks. It is a great collection and is very good for afan to have. Definitely buy!"
