CD Reviews

Amarti e l'immenso per me
loteq | Regensburg | 07/09/2000
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Along with other Italian artists like Gianna Nannini or Ricchi e Poveri, Alice defined a popular semi-genre which is largely known as "Italo disco", particularly in Germany. This self-titled album is regarded as her debut, although there are a few obscure late-'70s records available. "Per Elisa", Alice's first bona-fide hit single, immediately sets forth her amazing, rough voice. "Una notte speciale" with its pearling synth cascades is Alice's biggest hit to date, it charted just about everywhere in Europe and still receives some radio airplay. The rest of this 33-minute album doesn't come close to these two classic songs, though there are some nice moments. "Momento d'ozio" is quite relaxing. Not all of the music has aged gracefully, the bleepy keyboards and the pseudo-rock guitars sound pretty outdated, and the musicianship is by far not as good as those of later albums. So, this CD will primarily remain an item for completists, since the two singles can also be found on Alice's various hit compilations. The subsequent album "Azimut" is a more accomplished and focused affair."
