CD Reviews

Beautiful vintage touristy hawaiian vocal music

"alfred apaka's voice is bing crosbyish and slightly overpolished, but with a nice tendency to back off in volume and intensity right when the schmaltzometer is about to peg. good crooner stuff here. hell, you can even swap back and forth between 'lovely hula hands' and 'lovely hula girl'. that's enough to keep even the most lecherous of us busy!very nice moments on this cd. i especially like the viki ti trio on 'kalua'. music has changed a lot since those days. this is a sweet trip back.the recording sounds a couple of generations down from a master reel, and some of the equalization choices are a little out there (the vocal on 'gay hawaiian party' almost sounds at first like it was intended to mimic a radio broadcast). still, this cd is worth a listen. if you don't turn it up too loud, the abnormal tape hiss isn't too apparent. glad i bought 'hawaiian favorites'."
Great, burnished voice

"My own personal favorite here is "White Ginger Blossoms," where Alfred Apaka's voice is perfectly phrased and a precise, deft, delicate touch. Some of the faster party music on the record is pretty kitschy, but especially in the slower tunes this is some of the very best Hawaiian vocal music out there. Overall, this record is a real trip down memory lane and a great pleasure."
Exquisite
