DR. ALFONSO ORTIZ TIRADO- "LO MEJOR DE LO MEJOR"
L. Dequesada | JAMAICA,, NY United States | 06/28/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Dr.Alfonso Ortiz Tirado was virtually the most important tenor in Latin America during the 30's and 40's. Dr.Ortiz Tirado was born in Sonora,Mexico, during the late 1890's. After moving to Mexico City with his family he began to study medicine and graduated. In Mexico City he also took music and singing lessons, among his classmates were other soon to be luminaries of Mexican and Latin music, Jose Mojica, Pedro Vargas and Juan Arvizu. By the time 1930 rolled around all "four amigos" were signed by the legendary RCA Victor Mexicana and started recording for the famed label, the rest is written in gold and diamond letters in the history of latin american music. This great BMG double CD brings us a great part of the RCA discography of Dr.Ortiz Tirado and offers us a series of previously unedited on CD format bonus tracks. Also in this CD are some of Dr.Ortiz Tirado's historical recorded duets with his sister Sarah Ortiz Tirado and also with Pedro Vargas and Juan Arvizu, hi!s former music school classmates. Most of these recordings were made from master lacquer/metal discs during the 30's and 40's and under that era's primitive technology, so please do not expect state of the art sound. Unfortunately Dr.Alfonso Ortiz Tirado retired from both the singing stage and recording studios in 1955 because of failing health and died in Mexico City,on Sept.7, 1960, leaving a void not filled until Placido Domingo appeared on the latin music scene during the 80's. This double CD by the late Dr.Ortiz Tirado is of such historical importance, its acquisition is a must by all latin music and classical music lovers."
