CD Reviews

A true delight!
M. Bernocchi | Old Windsor, Berkshire United Kingdom | 05/07/2005

"Alex Schultz's first solo album is really a true delight. How wonderful, and how wonderfully played by all the musicians involved! After more than 20 years spent playing the blues finally his first solo recording and the final result couldn't be any better than this. His guitar playing is just fantastic throughout the entire CD and, I have to say, it left me speechless since the first listening. With three great vocalists involved in the project (Finis Tasby, Lynwood Slim and Tad Robinson) and a fantastic band supporting him, Alex explores different shadows of blues always with great taste and feeling. If you like West Coast blues, swinging blues and slow ones this is the CD for you just pick it up and you will not be disappointed. Great stuff from start to finish, one of my favourite purchases so far in 2005."
100% listening pleasure!

"This is one of those cd's which you put in your CD player, you sit down in a chair, close your eyes and enjoy the fantastic music you hear with a big smile on your face! First of all, the cd has been very well recorded, you hear every single instrument and the balance between the instruments and voices is perfect! It almost sounds like an acoustic album. And second, the musicians are great, one of the best of the contemporary blues scene! 'let's start again' with Tad Robinson on vocals, he sings so melodious!. The guitar solo's of Alex Schultz are so dosed and controlled, only a professional who really understands how to handle a guitar can play like this! And the sound of his (I think) old Epiphone gives me chills. For me, it is one of the best blues CD's I have ever heard (and I heard a lot)!"
Originality by a real pro

"I have to admit that I actually bought a couple of Rod Piazza CDs just to hear the talents of Alex Schultz. Also his work on "Blowing Like Hell" by William Clarke (buy it!) is incredible. In this solo effort Mr. Schultz is on his own and his guitar work although toned down is just as distinctive, original and wonderful. Generally I dislike the addition of any horns when I listen to the blues but on this CD they tend to add rather than distract as they do so often on overproducted works. Most of the tracks are updated versions of jump blues mixed with instrumentals and slow burners. But the star, once again, is Alex Schultz's clear guitar "voice." Restrained and unrushed; his guitar and the overall production of this CD is just perfect. Hopefully he'll get the attention he so richly deserves. This is one of the best blues CDs of the year. One word of warning: If you're a modern electric, "Steve Ray" fanatic this may not be the CD for you. But if you love well conceived and executed blues then buy it!"
