CD Reviews

Over-Processed (In Most Part)...........

(3 out of 5 stars)

"As a huge fan of Aleks Syntek, I've been afraid that someday, I'd encounter an album that I thought was less than stellar...... And it turns out to be this one- "Metodos De Placer Instantaneo"......

I'll cut to the chase here. The sonics of this CD aren't up to the standards of Syntek's past albums. The middle tracks, from "Desvanecer" to "Angel de Luz", generally have an annoying "pinched" character in the midrange. The absolute polarity on this CD is inverted. (This could be a good disc for demonstrating absolute polarity.) There is too much dynamic compression as well.

It is also depressing to hear Syntek's voice "pitch-corrected" on most tracks...... Most notably on "Desvanecer", which I thought could have been a masterpiece...... Of the mid tracks, "Mas de 1000 Anos" and "Loca" were most-enjoyable, but "Loca" had excessive dynamic "limiting". Although bonus track "Aqui Estoy Yo" is one of the better-sounding tracks and a nice composition written by Luis Fonsi, the vocals were pitch-corrected to where I couldn't bear it past the halfway point. (Fonsi and David Bisbal are what I would call stereotypical modern pop singers..... I much prefer the vocals from Syntek's own band off YouTube video with this particular song.) I also didn't care for "Ese Mal Gusto" and "Mujer Animal". The mic'ing in "Ese Mal", a track overdubbed with Syntek's voice creating melodies, harmonies and even percussive effects, picked up excessive noise from verbal "consonants" and "plosives"..... This could have been a neat tune had it been recorded better.

That said, there are two absolute gems on this CD: "Sin Motor" and "Amalia"....... These happen to be the two "least processed" tracks on the album, and are what Aleks Syntek is all about..... Both tunes are innovative and intoxicatingly musical- I cannot even pin an influence on them..... Refreshing and original. (If you want an entire Syntek album like this, it's "Bienvenido a la Vida".)

Overall, the music in most part was at least decent........ But the over-processing and pitch correction really hold this one back. Hopefully, this is an aberration rather than setting a precedent. Whether two superlative tracks make it worth buying the entire album is up to the individual..... But then again, you can download the MP3 of individual songs. Those tolerant to pitch correction might still enjoy this album a lot."
