Synopsis

Though the smoky alto of this Muscle Shoals native is rich with promise, the debut album by 17-year-old Alecia Elliott suffers from a split personality. Much of the selection is diva-esque balladry, with the Titanic-sized emoting of "I'm Waiting for You" and "That's the Only Way" making Elliott sound old beyond her years. Some of the rest is kid's stuff, from the cloying social conscience of "I Don't Understand" to the perky funk of the title hit to the Shania-in-training "You Wanna What?" (one of two songs on the album that Elliott helped write). Yet, on the album-opening "Some People Fall, Some People Fly"--cowritten and previously recorded by Matraca Berg-- Elliott shows how she can soar with a song that suits her. --Don McLeese

CD Reviews

I'm definitely diggin' it.....

"I bought Alecia Elliot's CD on impulse about a week ago, but for once did not regret my impulse buy. The day after I bought it I met her at a signing at Best Buy. She was very sweet, and shy, a definite change from Britney Spears' vixen image. The other night my friend was over, and we were listening to the CD, and we both were talking about how great it was that finally some teenage girl wasn't flaunting herself, but writing real lyrics that we could relate to. Sure, some people might think she's a Britney Spears wanna be, but unlike Britney, Alecia sings songs that actually apply to girls of today. She also encourages girls not to succumb to sexual pressure in her song "You Wanna What?", which she co-wrote with some other writers. Her song "I'm Waiting For You" talks about keeping herself for the one she knows she will be with forever. Alecia is definitely a positive influence, and it's great to listen to someone who isn't afraid to be good. I look forward to her next album."
Talented young singer trapped in pedestrian productions

"Given that this is marketed by MCA's Nashville division, one might assume that this was a country music CD. But even by today's loose radio standard of "country," there's little country music or spirit to be found here. For the most part this is slick, middle-of-the-road pop.Elliott is quite a talent, with a surprisingly mature voice, but the material she's chosen to sing is either beyond her years (e.g., Matraca Berg's "Some People Fall, Some People Fly") or the sort of highly-charged teen anthems (e.g., "I'm Waiting For You") that can be found up and down the dial.Unlike earlier teen queens, Elliott's great talent has not yet found a sympathetic, innovative home. The production and playing are the sort of mechanial reproductions that are now endemic to Nashville "product." And though her voice is able to play along nicely, the end result isn't particularly memorable. Here's hoping her debut is successful enough to give her a second shot, and that she makes more of that opportunity than she's (presumably) been allowed to the first time out."
I Love It!

"If you'd like to hear some cool new country instead of the usual boring stuff, this is a CD to get. I saw Alecia Elliott on Jay Leno a few weeks ago and she was great. Finally a hip young country girl(like me lol). I luv every song on this CD. "You Wanna What?" is my favorite because I've had it happen to me and I know exactly what she's singing about. The other songs I really like are: "Aint No Ordinary Love", "I'm Waiting For You" and "I Dont Understand". I cant wait for her next video. I'm glad I found out about Alecia on CMT. I started diggin' it and now my parents and brothers and sisters are diggin it. Too bad my radio station only plays the same ten artists over and over and over again. They should be playing Alecia Elliott. Luv and peace y'all!"
