Synopsis

The banjo conjures up images of bluegrass and country and there are touches of that here, but Akira Satake is far more adventurous. He pushes his instrument (and koto, which he also plays) into territory where it's not often found, such as on "Tail Wag Dog Jig (Parts 1 & 2)," which includes singing heavily influenced by Finnish group Värttinä. By taking the banjo out of its normal context and placing it next to instruments from other cultures (and the banjo's origins are African), Satake gives himself a freedom to create unusual sounds, and with support from talent like fiddler Johnny Cunningham and frame drummer Glen Velez, he goes anywhere and everywhere his imagination can carry him. Add to that a remarkably impressive technique, and you have a winner here. --Chris Nickson

The Next Level
A Scott | Nottingham. United Kingdom | 04/11/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Wordsworth wrote that,"Every great and original artist, in proportion as he is great and original, must himself create the taste by which he is to be relished". Akira has done this. As Mason Williams blurred the distinction between classical and pop with Classical Gas, he has gone one step further by lifting banjo music to a new level of creativity. What Akira Satake has achieved is akin to what Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock did for painting; taken the art another glorious step further. Such international diversity of sounds and arrangements show up the Nashville 'speed is all' attitude for what it is worth. I look forward to hearing Akira's next CD with keen anticipation. This one I have waited for for years."

"You have found the music to take you places you never were before. This CD will do things to your head that even you didn't know could be done! The melodys are straight out of a fairy tale with the strains and illusions of inner pleasure! If you need to go to that place, buy this CD and let my words become Gospel. Thank you Mr Satake for the trip. And thanks for letting me ride in first class..... Mudpuppy"

"An excellent album that coalesces a variety of different musical styles into a logical blend due to the strong compositions of Mr. Satake. There's humor, mysticism, hot licks, funky rhythms, intelligence, intimacy, artistic daring, and accessibility. What more do you want?"
