Excellent "Early Soul" vocal Group
(5 out of 5 stars)
"The 5 Royales were topping the R&B charts several years before Rock around the Clock and were Doo Wop's most prominent early model. This is a wonderful collection of 15 tracks from their King records days in the mid fifties (only the first three songs are listed above). The standout tracks here are "The Slummer the Slum" which made Dave Marsh's Top 1001 Singles of Rock and Soul, and "I Wonder" one of the earliest examples of soul lead vocals and the growing influence of the church on Rock and Roll. One of the most sophisticated vocal groups in 20th century recorded history and among the longest lived (1947-1963), they enjoyed continual chart success throughout their careers. That they are not as well known as many of the teen street corner groups is probably a reflection of their personal ages at the dawn of Rock and Roll (These men were already in their 30's), which made them less photogenic for the majority of written and filmed Rock History, A history that began revising itself with Marsh's book."
