Charlie Parker welcomed the opportunity to record standards with a small string ensemble in 1949, and the results are stunning, his liquid alto soaring over the tuneful and only occasionally stiff arrangements. Along the way, he invests tunes like "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "Laura" with a unique blend of bluesy realism and mercurial improvisation. The CD adds live versions from a Carnegie Hall concert, and there are also two brilliant versions of Neal Hefti's "Repetition." The 1947 version has Bird flying spontaneously over the dense orchestration of horns, strings, and Latin percussion. --Stuart BroomerCharlie Parker2023-07-16T18:39:23-05:000

<img style="margin:4px 10px 10px 0;" src="https://nationalbookswap.com/cd//s/57/3857/503857.jpg" alt="Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite" border="0" align="left"></img>
As part of its new-millennium celebrations, the Canadian government opened a series of linked hiking trails across the country, some 10,000 miles of pathway through every conceivable kind of northern terrain. The Trail of Dreams suite, composed by the country's most famous jazz musician, was commissioned to commemorate the trail. Oscar Peterson has explored nationalistic themes before, and, like his 1964 Canadiana suite, this one is inspired by the changing landscape and shifting cultures encountered in crossing so vast a country, from the Celtic reel of "Dancetron" to a minuet. Michel LeGrand provides string arrangements for Peterson's themes, expanding and supporting the work of Peterson's quartet: guitarist Ulf Wakenius, bassist Niels Henning-Orsted Pedersen, and drummer Martin Drew. The strings only add to the warm glow that's already present in Peterson's tunes, from the engagingly swinging "Open Spaces" and "Cookin' on the Trail" to the limpid serenity of "Banff the Beautiful" and "Harcourt Nights." Peterson, celebrating his 75th birthday, is not the powerhouse at the piano he once was, but there are sparkling moments throughout that show he retains his vibrant rhythmic sense. Much of the lead and solo work goes to Wakenius. The latest in a string of fine Peterson guitarists, he's more than up to the task. --Stuart BroomerOscar Peterson2023-03-14T13:49:09-05:000

Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington the most important artists in the history of jazz and the two most influential American musicians of the 20th Century. Because of their centennials (1999 for Duke and 2000 for Louis), their great legacy is celebrating a worldwide rennaissnce. And this month, they are the focus and the continum in Ken Burns' JAZZ, a 20-hour documentary to be broadcast on PBS. In April, 1961, these two giants got togethr in a New York studio for their only encounter. Louis brought his trumpet, voice and the all-stars with Trummy Young and Barney Bigard. Duke brought his pianistic talents and a considerable canon of great compositions. The magic that transpired over one night and the following afternoon was an historic simgularity. This disc contains all 17 master takes that made during those magical sessions, newly remixed from the original tapes with 24-bit/96kHz mastering for maximum fidelity, far superior to the previous mid-price CD issue. The Ellington Centenary in 1999 brought renewed attention to a unique musical legacy, producing a host of definitive reissues and tribute recordings. However, this modest, single-CD compilation remains an excellent introduction to Duke Ellngton's work as composer and bandleader, two indistinguishable roles. It includes many of the original recordings of his most familiar songs, reaching back to the 1930s for the swinging "It Don't Mean a Thing" and the exotic "Caravan" and forward to the 1950s for "Satin Doll." The first 10 tracks appear here in their original monaural sound, and they're an authentic account of the early years of Ellington's marvelous band--with the rich, smooth saxophone textures of Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney, the soaring muted trumpets of Cootie Williams and Rex Stewart, and the unadorned musicality of Ivie Anderson's voice. If you want a CD with just the most famous tunes, or if you want to introduce someone to Ellington's music in all its regal brilliance, this is a good place to start. --Stuart Broomer Duke Ellington2022-02-27T22:44:34-05:000

"Chamber Jazz" an original style of music composed by Christopher Caliendo was created to unite the elegance and sophistication of European chamber music with the rhythmic excitement of American Jazz. Pat Metheny's most ambitious solo project is also his most emotionally rich work as composer. A conceptual song cycle inspired by a tumultuous relationship frames the CD's alternately intense and introspective motifs with sweeping orchestrations and a shifting array of global musics spanning Asia, Europe, and the Americas. With a vast cast (including numerous Metheny Group members past and present), and Metheny himself marshalling percussion, horns, and keyboards as well as guitar and guitar synthesizer, Secret Story is by turns lush, heroic, heartbroken, at once epic and intimate. --Sam SutherlandPat Metheny2020-09-24T17:25:55-05:000
