CD Reviews

1984? That Was 20 Years Ago!
Andrew Stevenson | Union Springs, New York | 08/18/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I first bought "1984" as an LP when it came out back in 1965. First let me get two of the cuts out of the way: the title piece "1984" is primarily made up of corny sound effects, while the cut titled "One Little Indian" is not only offensive, but the playing tries to be funny and isn't.....it's just irritating. That's two of the nine cuts that I can do without. And yet when I saw this music for sale as a CD during a trip to Japan I quickly bought it. Why? Because I love the other seven cuts. "Try Love" and "Gee! Sam Gee" are absolutely haunting. "Listen To The Wind" and "The Greatest Story Ever Told" are given beautiful treatments. "Soul Sister" and "Listen To The Wind" swing hard. And Yusef let his pianist Mike Nock be the featured performer on Nock's own composition "Love Waltz"; the talented Australian acquits himself very well indeed. No I didn't come close to paying $30 for this CD (I don't know if I would ever pay $30 for any CD), but if it ever becomes available in the States at a more reasonable price give it a try.....if only for the seven great cuts."
