A Selection Of Duets....Willie plus one .

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I note with interest news of a forthcoming album release from Willie Nelson entitled " Duets " no details of included tracks are as yet available . This particular album could have been titled " Duets " as some of his most famous and sucessful duets are included , from the superb opening track "Pancho and Lefty " the exceptional Townes Van Zandt composition , accompanied by Merle Haggard ( there is also an album with this as the title track ) . There are some tremendous performances ; the sublime " Seven Spanish Angels " with the incomparable Ray Charles ; the romantic " To All The Girls I've Loved Before " with Spanish heart-throb Julio Inglesias , or the foot tapping " They All Went To Mexico " with Carlos Santana . These , to me , are certainly the most well known , popular and sucessful although his duet with Frank Sinatra ( A Foggy Day ) would not be out of place here . " Honky Tonk Woman " is taken from his " One From The Road " album with Leon Russell and like this song the album is distinctive , quirky but thoroughly enjoyable never the less . The weakest tracks for me are his duets with " Hank Williams " and " Mel Tillis " and I found this version of " Half A Man " with George Jones a bit bland . However while " Slow Movin Outlaw " with Luct J. Dalton was an absolute treat the highlight of the entire album for me has to be the top notch Neil Young composition " Are There Any More Real Cowboys " he also duets with Nelson on this and the result is simply sensational , it is a great pity this pair did not record more often together . A well put together and varied album which I am sure contains tracks from which most people will be able to select a few favourites ."
