Ralph J. Steinberg | New York, NY United States | 08/15/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a wonderful compliation of Mengelberg performances, all in really superb sound. I have been told that when the "Damnation of Faust" excerpts first came out on Capitol-Telefunken LP's, they were used as hi-fi demonstation disks. I can easily believe it. The dynamic range alone will make hair stand on end. The "Unfinished" is one of Mengelberg's really strong performances, far more integrated than his live 1939 rendition, on Philips. The symphony emerges in a more brooding, darker expression than usual (Furtwaengler excepted, of course). The "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" will come as a surprise for many, for Mengelberg utilizes a completely classical approach, poised and balanced throughout. This is another example of a superb musician from the past, who should never be forgotten."
