CD Reviews

Great album(s), bad title

"What the heck does 2 Gether on 1 mean? Well, it took a look at the discography at the back of Waylon's autobiography for me to figure it out. When I did, I knew I wanted this CD. This is a double CD, combining two of Waylon's early ablums, "Leavin' Town" and "Waylon Sings Ol' Harlan" onto one 56 minute CD. "Leavin' Town" is Waylon's second RCA album from 1966. A couple of my favorite songs are the first two, the title track, written by Bobby Bare and "Time To Bum Again", one of Waylon's best early songs. Three songs were written or co-written by Waylon, "Time Will Tell the Story", "Anita, You're Dreaming", and "I Wonder Just Where I Went Wrong". The entire album is very well done; there are no bad tracks.Songs 13-24 come from "Waylon Sings Ol' Harlan". Harlan is of course, Harlan Howard, one of the most productive songwriters in country music history. The songs chosen are outstanding. All were written by Harlan Howard, except "Tiger By the Tail" and "Foolin' 'Round", which were co-written by Howard and Buck Owens. The original liner notes are included for both albums, Harlan Howard wrote the notes for the latter. Two of Waylon's other early RCA albums have recently been re-released by Buddha records. These are "Folk Country", his first RCA album, and "Love of the Common People", his fourth. This double CD, which sells for about the same price as each of those two, fits nicely between them as it includes Waylon's second and third RCA albums. (Actually, there was one between them, the soundtrack to the movie "Nashville Rebel", but I'm not counting that because it is a soundtrack and is not currently available). This is great "pre-Outlaw" Waylon Jennings and is well worth the price."
Country music at its best!!

"This CD only further proves to me that from the mid '60s to the early '70s, there may have been no better performer in country music than Waylon Jennings. I am much more captivated by the look and sound of the early Waylon than his outlaw years. Already on the cutting edge of country music, his wide selection of folk and honky tonk tunes, soulful voice and deft guitar picking (lots of bluesy licks) brought a fresh approach to the already classic '60s country sound. It's a shame the early Waylon years never got its due, but thankfully CDs like this are available. If you haven't discovered early Waylon, you don't know what your missing."
Pre-beard Waylon is the best!

"This cd is great. It really shows what a talent he is. His voice resonates beutifully on these records. I prefer the more soulful reflective songs from his pre-outlaw days. A great place to start if you have never heard Waylon Jennings."
