Synopsis

Producer-musicians Jimmy Waldo and D. Kendall Jones traveled to Kathmandu to record the raw sample material for this trip-hop collage of Nepali singing, street chat, and instrumental performances. Recalling similar experiments like those of Deep Forest, Loop Guru, Transglobal Underground, and others, Waterbone's mosaic is pieced together over surging dance beats, albeit with more breath than straight house or techno grooves, and processed through shiny reverbs and cloudburst echoes. The cool "Eastern Girl" fits Tibetan bells into a Tangerine Dream-style rhythm pattern, while "Tantra" undulates to Nepali monk group chants, Euro-pop synthesizer melodies, and the charming voice of Lobsang, a Kathmandu girl, whose quarter-tone inflections soar over Waterbone's relentless house beat. Ethno-techno with a tuneful flair. --James Rotondi

CD Reviews

Great CD, Too short for the money :(

"I did love the CD, But For this type of Music you can find as good for less, I have a few CD's of simillar Music type. If you can find Tibet used and in good condition it is worth it, but otherwise I would suggest other Imports Like the Buddha Bar, 1, 2, 3 and Talvin Singh's earliest work, Delerium's Karma. or Aral by Catherine Laura. I would recommend Tibet mainly for Import collectors, but the music type is easy to find, in my opinion Tibet is not worth the expense."

"Beautifully recorded disc in a vein similar to Deep Forest. I don't like labels very much so I would hesitate to say that it is "New Age", although someone who likes "New Age" might very well enjoy it. One of the facets I like most about this recording is the creative synthesizer work -- bold tones and surprising counterpoints to the main melody abound. I drive to and from work listening to this CD on a regular basis. I often put it on in the background when dinner guests are present and they always pull me aside and say, "Who is this?". I am sad to see that this wonderful CD is currently unavailable except as a used CD or through an overpriced partner (8/20/2002). I know of at least 3 people who would like to own it."
