The Wrong Language Is So Right
James S. Eisenberg | 02/26/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"One of the last productions of the "old" La Scala. This heavily cut, wrong language production of RIENZI is exciting in a way that many recent revivals of Wagner's first success miss entirely. Inspired by French and Italian models, RIENZI sounds great in Italian. Wagner's roots in Spontini, Mercadante (anybody familiar with AGNES VON HOHENSTAUFEN and LE DUE ILLUSTRI RIVALI will notice structural similarities to RIENZI), Bellini and Meyerbeer seem to stand out in greater relief.

Despite the cuts, Scherchen's conducting is vivid and exciting on a moment to moment basis. Though past his prime, Di Stefano brings tremendous commitment to his portrayal of the title role. Raina Kabaiwanska is wonderful in the thankless role of Irene. (What was Wagner thinking not giving this character an aria ?) Perhaps the most controversial edit in Scherchen's edition is transposing the role of Adriano from soprano to tenor range, but Gianfranco Cecchele makes the most of his aria. The small roles are superbly cast.

The sound recording is more than passable.
