CD Reviews

A musical genius!
Joseph E. Lechnar | Joliet, IL | 01/31/2009

"To suggest that Max Steiner is a musical genius would be an understatement. Here is a microcosm of work that barely scratches the surface of his myriad talents. Beautifully arranged and wonderfully recorded, this is a tribute to the music of a fantastic composer, and is a throwback to the "Golden Age of Hollywood". We will not see another like him in our time. Highly recommended!"
Music to build dreams upon

"gerhardt's recordings of suites and themes from classic films are the groundstone for the collector of film music. the orchestra is first rate and rarely does gerhardt sacrifice any of the integrity in translating materials in to shorter, compact versions of the original.

my personal favorite is the 'johnny belinda' suite. the main themes are put together beautifully and the quality of the recording is pristine.

in one case or two, gerhardt improved upon the original. the 'symphonie moderne' for piano and orchestra got a little pumping when gerhadt included it in this collection. in the film there is very little opportunity for the piano to stand out; in this recording, the piano is the star. and the cadenzas take on the same qualities of showiness, glamour and fire that was to be found in many of warner bros' most famous stars.

these recordings are like potato chips--once you buy one, you will want all of them. and the ultimate challenge will be to find them on vinyl."

"I loved the background music so I did get the CD. Recently I read that Katherine Hepburn was the number one actress, I disagree. I think Bette Davis was the greatest actress I have ever seen. She took more variety roles than KH."
