Chamber Concertos
M. Figg | USA | 11/20/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Easily my favorite collection of chamber works, this collection features "trio sonatas" written for 2 melody instruments and continuo. The works are instantly recognizable as Vivaldi, yet his signature harmonic/rhythmic style is given a fresh reading through both the use of smaller forces and by this tight, energetic ensemble. The four pieces for 2 violins and continuo translate much of his language from his concertos to a small group. The use of fewer voices than in the orchestral works, combined with a very open, airy texture, allows the listener to really hear how much (or how little!) is happening musically to produce some very beautiful, catchy and fun music. The piece for piccolo and bassoon is probably my favorite: its contrast of light, silvery (though never shrill) piccolo and metallic, burry bassoon is a revelation. The violin and cello sonata did not make much of an impression, yet it is nonetheless structurally competent and driving.

These musicians elevate music that might otherwise be "light" or "occasional" into a true event, and their personality makes this music the rival of any large-scale orchestral work. Highly recommended!
