The new album, Exact Change, is produced by Mike Tarantino with accompanying musicians from the band, the Boulder Acoustic Society (Denver), who contribute a blend of traditional roots and blues to Vox's ultimately pop-rock sensibility ("Oh I Wonder"), but the album has a distinct worldly flair as tunes with French and Flamenco influences ("Mon Cheri" and "Intermission") are visited by accordion, upright bass, and banjo. Vox's silky vocal lines, both haunting and hopeful, encompass every song and slide right into the cracks like a thick lacquer, relaxing in a beach hammock in "Technicolor Way" or encouraging the shy to dance on "La Musique," for which Vox has also incorporated a squeezebox she managed to acquire during her travels. Retiring the guitar until a later date, the 2010 Vox is performing full time on ukulele. Known for her refreshingly modern and rhythmic ukulele technique, Exact Change continues to propel Vox's original style towards the contemporary, but it remains clear that her voice and songs themselves are at the heart of everything she produces.
