Bad Spanish Elevator Music - Nada es Bueno
K. Franklin | Hibbing, MN USA | 06/06/2009
(1 out of 5 stars)

"Wow. Talk about dull, boring, predictable, and sappy! I thought we were getting Brazilian music. This sounds more like bad country western, sung in Spanish by two guys with accents. This is a collection of genderless, easy-listening, platitudinous "love" songs. Guitar, vocals, and...accordion. Yeah, accordion. The lyrics can mean anything, which is to say that they mean nothing. Each song has a very short verse that is repeated over and over. You can listen to about 30 seconds of each song and then skip to the next without missing anything. The music is unmemorable. Are these songs of gay love? Straight love? or...pet love? Hard to tell.

Here are the themes of the ten songs:

Love Memories - It was pure hell hanging with you. But now that you're gone, it's worse.

Passionate Friend - After such passion, how can we just be friends?

Not Even Normal - Although our love is disordered, it feels so real.

I Still Miss You - Even though you got sick of me, I still miss you.

Pics - I shredded all the photos of us 'cause they make me feel ill.

Nothing - I thought our love would last but all that's left is bloody wounds.

It's You - Despite it's irrationality, my dream of loving you will one day come true.

NYC - This hero is going to New York with his dreams, his woman and his truck.

Butterflies - I thought I loved someone else, but now that you're here I'm all yours.

You Knew - You knew I would die of a broken heart but you left anyway."

"The lyrics and album notes on this CD are entirely in Spanish. So, what is a non-Spanish speaker doing reviewing this album? Well, I enjoy Brazilian music, although that usually means to me Luis Bonfa. But even without understanding the lyrics, I found Victor and Leo's music highly entertaining. Most of the songs are by Victor, and they fall into the category of tuneful, middle of the road international Pop, something nearly any listener can identify with. The band is pleasantly acoustic, often featuring accordian and in one instance, if I am correct, mandolin. The band is reduced substantially for the title song, Nada Es Normal. Victor and Leo have pleasant voices and they blend very well, although you will not mistake them for Simon and Garfunkel. The music is a little too generic for me to want to return to it very often, but I think it is relaxing enough to provide me with a pleasant aural bath when needed. Sound engineering is clear and pleasant, never aggressive. I am eager to hear what Spanish-speaking reviewers have to say about this disc."
Easy Listening, but Poppy too. The Portuguese Versions Are P

"Victor and Leo's CD is basically Spanish Country music. I thought that this album would be in Portuguese since they are from Brazil, but they are singing their songs in Spanish here. Some of the songs sound more country than others. The first song, "Recuerdos De Amor," has an accordion playing with the guitar! "Nueva York" has harmonica along with the guitar.

But other songs sound like easy listening mainstream country. "Nada" and "Eres Tu" are both pop country sounding songs.

Those that speak Spanish will probably like this less. They may sound better in Portuguese. This is mostly easy listening but some of the faster paced songs like "Sabias" make it hard to mellow out to the whole album. And a few of the songs have lyrics that are plain cheesy.

If you like Spanish pop or country music you might enjoy this. Otherwise, it's just OK."
