The sound is unique

(3 out of 5 stars)

"The recorded sound is unique. I like it. The orchestra has a wonderful clarity and I heard many inner voices not heard in the "big" recordings (Karajan, Solti, etc). However, the balance between the singers and orchestra doesn't seem very natural. Kristian Johannsson is an excellent Radames, with a strong sound and easy top. What's more, he sings with some musicianship (a quality lacking in most tenors). Maria Dragoni has some technical trouble with Aida, but her voice possesses a touching, vulnerable quality and was very moving. Barbara Dever is a top-notch Amneris, she was the vocal linch-pin of the whole performance, feeding and giving emotion off of the other principals and the orchestra. The chorus was amateurish but it did have a big sound (there were lots of them), too bad their diction was so bad. Saccani is an excellent conductor who has a true feeling for Aida, he seemed to know where to push and where to relax and he was able to bring out inner voices not readily heard. All told, I think this recording is enjoyable ...."
