Great Reading of Vaughan Williams' 5th

"John Barbirolli didn't record Vaughan Williams that much or as much as he should have! This particular performance of the 5th is one of the best I've heard and I've heard almost all of them. The interpretation and performance are solid. The Philharmonia orchestra play great. While this performance may not be Barbirolli's "best" in terms of performance, it certainly is his best sounding (Barbirolli previously made a recording of this work in the '40s). I love the way Barbirolli handles the "Scherzo" and "Romanza (Lento)" sections of this symphony. The "Scherzo" is probably one of the best I've heard, while the "Romanza" I'm afraid goes to Previn's second recording on Telarc. If you love this symphony, then you must get Previn's Telarc recording as soon as possible. It is outstanding!

The other selections on this recording are a nice bonus with Malcolm Sargent and the LSO. "Torward the Unknown Region" and "Serenade to Music" get quite nice readings. It is, however, the 5th that steals the show here. 4 1/2 stars."
