White Mansions

"I purchased this album in about 1978 as a 33 rpm and bought it because of the artists. As I went home I visited a freind and loaned it to him, unopened, while I went to another freinds house. I told him I hadn't listened to it and didn't know if it was any good or not. When i returned he told me it was an outstanding record and we sat around for a while and heard it again a couple of times and since I worked in Hazard, Ky. he asked me to return to the record store there and order him a copy. I did so and as far as I know he still has it. My copy got damaged a few years later and I ordered myself another and have two copies at this time, but would love to have it on cd. The music is really good with a mixture of good, hard driving sothern rock oriented and slow country as only Jessie Colter could do. I guess I really don't know how to write a review, but I thought if I wrote something, and more folks would write a little something, they would make more copies. And, I would like to know if the new CD copies have the book with them. Thank you for reading this, if anyone does, and keep your socks up."

"This is an excellent CD. My basic purpose for this review is to help out those wanting this CD. It was reissued in 99' by mercury in a two CD set, the second CD being "The Legend of Jessie James" featuring Levon Helm, Johnny Cash, Charlie Daniels, Emmylou Harris, Albert Lee, and others. Paul Kennerly wrote the music for both. The Jessie James story is told in 17 tracks from the prewar Redleg terror, through the guerilla fighting under Quantrill, the postwar robberies and Jessies assasination. The 20 page color booklet with photos and the entire history of both albums is excellent. The numbers are (314-540 791-2)set / (314-540792-2)White Mansions /(314-540 793-2)The Legend of Jessie James I know the set is available as it was given to my neighbor as a gift in spring 2001, good luck!"

"An exceptional album. Friend has vinyl + book. Would love CD version. Listening to this album always brings great admiration of the music and the players. The best mix of blues, soul, bluegrass / rockabilly , gospel. This album has it all and is far from just "country". Full credit to the songwriters for the lyrics. The songs themselves bring out the true feelings of many listeners and brings us in touch with the lives of the "players". Anyone considering conflict could well learn a valuable history lesson combined with a knowledge of the effects of any war on all , not just the effects that this unforgettable war had on so many. A great well told story."
