Synopsis

Denis Leary's firefighter series, Rescue Me, is characterized by its delicate balance of brawn and sentiment. This CD, which collects tunes that have appeared in the first three seasons, reflects that balance, careening from the full-on rock & roll of the Von Bondies (their "C'mon C'mon" is the show's theme) and the Subways ("Oh Yeah") to the pensive, rootsy vibe of Ray Lamontagne ("All the Wild Horses") and the Devlins ("Love Is Blindness"). In his informative liner notes, Leary (who coproduces and cowrites the show in addition to starring in it) explains how he and his crew pick the songs they use. He doesn't really talk about how the songs reflect the show's take on masculinity, but the selections speak for themselves: There may be wives, girlfriends, or daughters, but Rescue Me is essentially about men. Which is perfectly fine, though it may explain why those who like to hear female voices once in a while (the Subways' bassist, Charlotte Cooper, does pipe up) are advised to look elsewhere (at one of the L Word soundtracks maybe?). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

CD Reviews

It's a sample. Not a comprehensive.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is the best TV show in years. And the soundtrack only has a few songs, so it's not meant to be comprehensive as some people expect it to be. I own and have watched the first two seasons of this show, and don't miss a single episode. If I had handpicked 14 songs from this show to put on a CD, these would be them. They are instrumental in all of the major events that take place on this show. The opening credits song? It's here. The song in the season 3 trailer that everyone asked about? Here. The song everyone wanted that played when Tommy beat the living daylights out of his brother for sleeping with his ex-wife? It's here.

Even if you've never watched the show, this is an excellent collection of passionate, rocking, moving music. You will fall in love with at least one track on this complation and wonder, "Who is that band?"

Cut the criticism, people. Soundtracks aren't meant to be comprehensive, i.e. every song ever played on a TV show. This is a great "best of" soundtrack of one of the best dramas on TV. Ever."
A good selection of songs from one of the best shows on TV

"I love Rescue Me as well. It's a great show and the music just adds to its awesomeness.

Now a lot of people have said they kept a log and such and such a song is missing, but I think this is a great selection of songs because 1)I can't instantly name every song that's playing, and who it's by to go look it up on iTunes. I can name a few sure but I wouldn't have been able to come up with all the songs that are on this CD. 2)It's a great mix of music by itself.

I also absolutely love the fact that they put The Black Keys on here. They are one of the bands I was able to pick out because I am a huge fan of them and I'm happy about any exposure they get.

I just felt like I should put in my two cents on this one. Like the other five star review said, it's not a comprehensive soundtrack, so calm down. It's a good mix."

"I'm normally not an indie rock fan, but I've always been a fan of the music on the show. This soundtrack is awesome--it's eclectic and powerful and I honestly couldn't stop listening to it for over a week in the car."
