CD Reviews

FINALLY, a label does a dance collection almost right

"The beauty of this disc is that the NOW series gives us a load of dance remixes of hugely popular songs not available on CD other than as part of continuous mix CDs by Ultra and Thrive, even though, if you listen to this CD through, you'll notice that one song begins just as soon as the other ends, with no silent space between songs. This is the kind of treatment dance collectors who still want their music on hard copy have been waiting for. The only down side is that they've used all the radio edits. But I'll take it for now since there are no other compilations out there giving us access to these mixes as individual tracks.

The other thing to note is that many of these club mixes are simply not as good as the original versions. Dave Aude's mix of Sean Kingston, for instance, is boring and takes all the energy out of the track, and I usually love Aude's mixes. The Calvin Harris remix of Katy Perry is also a disappointment, because there is a much better mix of the song that retains the actual attitude of the track--this one is kind of light and bouncy. Let it Rock is simply a perfect dance song on its own, so this electro remix doesn't make much of an impact. Some mixes are too epic to be contained in the less than 4 minute versions, such as the mixes of Lady GaGa and Kelly Clarkson. But you so get nearly 6 minutes of the remix of The Killers' Spaceman. Now THAT'S what I call club hits. The disc ends with several less commercial tracks that could easily have been left off this mainstream mix to make room for longer versions of some of the hits. And the disc closes with an unnecessary remix of a Jackson 5 classic, obviously in honor of Michael's passing. Still rather hear the original version.
