Synopsis

Album Description
The 1950s could be considered the last days of innocence. While Elvis gyrated to "Jailhouse Rock" and "All Shook Up," Pat Boone mused about "Love Letters In The Sand." Throughout the decade, "family-friendly" artists like Rosemary Clooney and Perry Como continued to release records and rule the AM airwaves. Pop music, short for "popular," was just that: music enjoyed by mom, dad and kids alike. The 3-disc Magic Moments ? The Best Of 50?s Pop, the companion set to the upcoming PBS special of the same name, revisits this time with the most memorable songs of the era. Includes #1 hits by Perry Como ("Catch A Falling Star"), Al Martino ("Here In My Heart"), Rosemary Clooney ("Hey There"), Debbie Reynolds ("Tammy"), Doris Day ("Secret Love") and more. All in a deluxe digibook packed with photos.

Timeless Music of Singable Songs
C. W. Emblom | Ishpeming, Michigan USA | 12/04/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This three disc CD set is the closest thing you will get to an all-encompassing set of non-rock and roll or doo wop songs of the 1950's. It includes groups such as The Four Lads, The Four Preps, The McGuire Sisters, and other groups in addition to individual singers such as Johnny Ray, Teresa Brewer, Patti Page, Rosemary Clooney, and others. The songs are dripping with nostalgia if you were a part of this era. If you were not, you will still enjoy these timeless songs. The songs are memorable, singable, and beg you to have a singalong."

"Shout Factory people and all the other labels in the world presents "MAGIC MOMENTS: THE BEST OF 50's POP", perfectly re-mastered from the vaults original recordings that have the who's who in the Music Department during those Golden Days of the fifties on the airwaves...Billy Vera did a bang up job producing and writing the informative (could have been a little more extensive) on the liner notes...each track remastered by Dave Donnelly (DNA Mastering-Studio City, California).

What!...no Frank Sinatra or Eddie Fisher...well you can't have everything...this is still one of the best compilations on the 50's that I've seen and heard so for...can't image a better collection of music just sit back, put the CD in, push play and close your eyes, let the enjoyment flow through the air...celebration of the songs that came from the heart with an appeal to all who were growing up or dating during the 50's...very detailed book that lists the record charts position, catalog number, label and the release date.

Some questions are noted in this very collectible book of liner notes which will test your sharp memories:

"Dean Martin once joked that he used to go over to which extremely mellow singer's house "to borrow a cup of sleep"? (was it Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Al Martino or Perry Como).

This doesn't have all the big hits of the '50s or all the big stars...an excellent over-view with some of the decade's biggest mainstream pop hits, this is a terrific nostalgia trip...I know most people think of the 50's music as Bill Haley & His Comets, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Elvis Presley...but many pop hits were out there before such as ballads, beautiful melodies with great lyrics and never to be forgotten love songs...all of the songs included in this collectiion make you feel young again remembering such wonderful MAGIC MOMENTS!

50's Pop Music At Its Best !
Michael McCracken | North Missouri USA | 10/27/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"My Music starts right after this Music ended - The Early 60's ! Now that I'm older, I appreciate this Music very much. The PBS Special that went along with this was outstanding. Live performances of these songs - those who are still with us. One thing I noticed with the special was - the singers could still sing, whereas many of the performers from My era have lost their best voice. I guess We partied a little rougher - ahh for the clean living of the 50's. THESE SONGS ARE GOOD !"
