CD Reviews

In a word, "brilliant."

"Astralwerks has long been a guilty pleasure of mine. As a label, they're savvy in that they release artists that are already established around the world or already have major buzz. Their whole roster is a veritable "best of." This is a great start for people just getting into the blanket genre of "electronic" music. But for people who are used to these songs already, they've gone one better and thrown in a few remixes that are pretty good as well. All in all, there might be better compilations out there, but for a label as commerical as Astralwerks, it's nice to see them getting good music out in the mainstream. Having said that, I haven't listened to the Stacie Orrico track yet... ;)"
Freq.Beats... at last, a techno compilation for today.

"You've seen the commercials for dance compilations "not available in stores" that promise you "the latest hits". If you had a kid that was into this type of music, you might order one of these Time Life compilations (Fired Up! is one such CD). You might even want a copy yourself. Usually, I'd say "don't bother". To the semi-avid nightclubber, these are the compilations to avoid. So it was a surprise to see something slightly more up to date. "Freq.Beats" is from AstralWerks, a company well versed in pushing the envelope of electronica. True, there are some older tracks on this compilation (Fluke's "Atom Bomb" for one), but this is forgivable because it's such a great tune. Iceland (Röyksopp), Britain (Basement Jaxx) and the West Coast of the USA (Supreme Beings Of Leisure) share honors here, so you're getting a good range of international dance tunes. Which is good.My one gripe: too many tunes from commercials. Still, at least it'll answer some of those "who sings this song?" moments when you see a Dentyne Ice ad (Gorillaz, featuring Damon Albarn)!"
