The title track of this album, "Emblems", is Aaron Copland's only original composition for band, and is intended as a work of substance: "music that is representative of the composer's best work . . . not written with all sorts of technical and practical limitations"- in Copland's own words. The rest of the album, containing tracks by composers such as Vincent Persichetti and Paul Hindemith, allows the listener the greatest freedom to decide "what [the music] means". Emblems, a compilation recorded by the United States Marine Band, contains important pieces and movements such as "Funeral Music for Queen Mary", "Aria della battaglia" and "Symphony in B-Flat for Band". Directed by Colonel Timothy W. Foley, the United States Marine Band plays beautifully on each piece, bringing new meanings to the characteristics of great music.
