This Would Have Made Papa Haydn Proud

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Like many of the music products on Amazon, this posting does not bother to show the music that this purchase includes. Let me dispense with that now. My review follows.

This is a 5-CD set.

CD 1 includes Symphony #104 ("London") and Symphony #95 (all performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Georg Solti).

CD 2 includes Symphony #94 ("Surprise"), Symphony #96 ("Miracle"), and Symphony #100 ("Military") (all performed by the Philharmonia Hungarica under Antal Dorati).

CD 3 includes the Cello Concerto in C Major, the Horn Concerti #1 and #2, and the Trumpet Concerto (performed by St. Martin in the Fields under Sir Nerville Mariner with Barry Tuckwell on horn and Alan Stringer on trumpet).

CD #4 includes String Quartet Op. 76, #3 and #4 ("Emperor" and "Sunrise," respectively), and the String Quartet Op. 76 #5 (performed by the Aeolian String Quartet).

CD #5 includes the Nelson Mass and 2 cantatas - "Arianna a Naxos" and "Berenice, che fai" (The Nelson Mass is performed by the London Symphony Chorus and the City of London Sinfonia under Richard Hickox. Barbara Bonney, Soprano - Anne Howells, Mezzo-Soprano, Anthony Rolfe, Tenor - Stephen Roberts, Baritone. The two cantatas are performed by the Handel & Haydn Society under Christopher Hogwood with Arleen Auger as Soprano.)

There are several things to admire about this wonderful set. As you can see, the price simply cannot be beat. Also, sometimes with "collections" like this, you only get excerpts of the music that you want to hear. But that is not the case with this box set - all pieces are presented in their entirety, allowing you to judge and enjoy the piece on all of its merits. I also appreciate that the music chosen spans much of Haydn's life. Though none of the earlier symphonies are included we do have a great sampling of the mid-to-late work: everything from the C-Major Cello Concerto and the first Horn Concerto (both of which date from the early 1760s) to the Opus 76 String Quartets (dating from 1796-1797). Last, but certainly not least, are the wonderful performers, orchestra, and conductors! Everyone from the LSO and Solti to Barry Tuckwell and Christopher Hogwood. Almost without exception, all the music in this collection is sparkling, fresh, well-interpreted, and clean. The recordings are top-notch and come very highly recommended!
