CD Reviews

Amazing (+ obscure?) Krishna Das
S. Moore | East side of the Western World | 05/02/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Wow.

I was skeptical when Krishna Das and Sultan Khan put out "A Drop Of The Ocean" a couple years ago-- I didn't want a cameo by KD to sell an otherwise weak album (I wasn't yet familiar with Sultan Khan). I got the CD, eventually, because it was on sale at a local used CD store. Of course, I was stunned by that albums beauty, depth, and grace.

"Invocation" is like the follow up to that album for me. I only vaguely recognized Ty Burhoe's name from seeing it in the credits of other albums (Incl. Drop of the Ocean) but, playing the album, it carries the unmistakable power and dignity of any of KD's music, transcending categories like "New Age", "Indian Classical", or "Kirtan" and becoming something new unto itself. Thank you *so* much, Ty!"

"Beautiful vocals . Enchanting mantras. I would use this music for my own personnel yoga practice."
Beautiful ~ Gorgeous ~ Absolutely Necessary for life to cont

"Maybe I will finally be able to start doing my yoga exercises; just looking at the cover photograph of people at the beach in a gorgeous backbend pose at the beginning of the earth; sunrise at the ocean, whence all life began... if music can transport us, then let me begin!

Absolutely fabulous, for the healing of the broken heart and wounded spirit in all of us, and the soaring wings which with we fly. This music must also be born of those who have no need for the healing of the broken wings, but emanate the harmony which makes all things whole. Thank you, thank you - graci, gracius, merci for this beautiful music which has come in a great hour of need. Yet another miracle of sacred spirit when all seems lost and forgotten, when we all might need it most.

Note there are additional artists featured on this CD: Ty Burhoe (on tabla), Krishna Das, Manorama, John Friend, Amy Ippoliti (vocals).

I don't know much about yoga chants or practice, but the opening statement in the CD booklet seems appropriate for "the secrets of the world," and something I am unknowing and eager to learn:

"Om namah shivaya gurave

satchitananda murtaye

nisprapancaya shantaya

niralambaya tejase"

"I bow to the goodness within myself,

known as Lord Shiva, who is the true teacher.

This essence inside takes the form of truth,

consciousness, and bliss.

Always present and full of peace, this essence inside

is completely free, and sparkles with a divine luster.""
