Great Introduction to Folk Revival!!
Lysillion | Chicago, IL | 11/04/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a great disc that covers a range of the great music produced in Britain during the folk revival of the '70 and later.

On one end of the musical spectrum, you have haunting a cappella harmonies in traditional songs, like the amazing Maddy Prior's "Grey Funnel Line" and Eliza Carthy's "Bonny Light Horseman." (These are my two top faves on an album full of favorite songs!)

Then you have the balladeers--It's hard to pick favorites from this group, but I love Dougie MacLean's "Caledonia" and Nic Jones's "Canadee-I-O" (of the "maiden in sailor's clothing" tradition, but with a happy ending).

Next there are the stomping, shouting, drinking-song-esque, party-in-a-track songs like the Tannahill Weaver's "Tae the Weaver's Gin Ye Gang."

Finally, there are the "folk-rock" songs, like "Letter from America" from the long-lived Scotish band The Proclaimers (you remember, from that '90s song "I Would Walk 500 Miles." Richard Thompson's fast-picking rock ballad about love and motorcyles is in a class of its own.

Reading the liner notes of this collection is like reading a who's who of folk music (if folk music ever had a who's who--debatable). Better yet, it's a fun listen. Give it a try."
