Anny Konetzni was a fine Isolde with a stunningly beautiful and sensuous sound. Though high C was always just beyond her abilities, she managed to create a most important career. Certainly, she rivals Nilsson as Isolde for the imposing quality of her middle register, only Nilsson did not have that fine timbre of Konetzni.
Sattler is good. He brings all the glory of youth as well as some flat singing. He possesses a timbre similar to Roland Hayes and Jussi Bjoerling for those who need comparisons. The Brangaena is good and the conducting is paced well. All in all this is a superb document of fine Wagnerian peformances." |
