CD Reviews

Nice, Cool Stuff. But Is It A TOTO?
susumu-5 | Japan | 06/06/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"TOTO is no doubt one of the most popular AOR bands among Top Amazon reviewers. The band's full-fledged comeback album in 1999 featuring Bobby Kimball a legend voice during early days until TOTO IV scored huge success in Japan and Europe. American version sees the changes in track order because many of the tracks are so Toto-less and sounds as if TOTO changed its music direction toward Lynyrd Skynard styled earthy straight rock.

Some are pure TOTO such as MELANIE and MAD ABOUT YOU. And CRUEL still has classic TOTO taste. But many rock though not in a bad manner and they are actually really cool. CAUGHT IN A BALANCE in particular is one of the best they had done during 90s. It is somewhat similar in style of Dave Era Van Halen somewhat but it is well constructed and worth listening a number of times. HIGH PRICE OF HATE is really groovy blues flavored rock. Overall they finally started what they really wanted to do and need some time before it would be honed enought to appeal large number of music fans.

Verdict: Earthy Rock Stuff.

Rating: 81 out of 100

Recommended for: Music fans who also love blues flavored rock such as Lynyrd Skynard. And Toto fans who appreciate rock side of the band."
How Do you Follow Jeff Porcaro? Simon Phillips Doesn't Hurt!
Gypsy Prince | Louisville, KY USA | 10/14/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Toto has always been a talented session musician's club featuring one the most brilliant and humble drummers ever to hit a high hat, Jeff Porcaro (R.I.P.). Toto decided to forge on and brought back Bobby Kimball on vocals (thank you) and enlisted British session drummer Simon Phillips to play drums. Wow! Congratulations Toto, Mr. Phillips rises to the occasion as he is a killer drummer and makes me want to purchase some of his lengthy discography. This is a great rockin Toto album. I had a hard time finding a copy of this for some time because of its popularity and finally snagged one here on Amazon. I don't give many five star ratings like some others who sometimes tell you how a cd was not the best, but they gave it five stars anyway. That's bad math you dolt! Anyway, this disc finds Toto stretching their musical muscles by incorporating quite a number of muscial styles such as blues, rock, country, jazz, etc. Toto fans who may not own this disc should just buy this now and be assured they are in for a real treat. For those new to this great rock group, you will experience some beautiful vocals, solid musicianship and superb writing. Toto has always been a "smooth" sounding band because they are so tight. This disc finds them tight as a finely crafted timepiece. It's time to buy some good music. Mindfields is highly recommended. - Ciao"
